Johannes Holmberg talks about AI in the industry

Johannes Holmberg, CEO of Calejo Future Intelligence, will participate as speaker at two different events in early 2020. During these days, he will be talking about AI in the industry and about Calejo’s latest successful project results with SCA and Boliden and about an upcoming Vinnova projects with ABB and SCA.

The first event is PPT’s winter seminar at Sweco In Stockholm on January 16, 2020. PPT is the abbreviation for the nonprofit association The Swedish Pulp and Paper Technology Group. PPT is an association founded on the promotion of Swedish technology for the pulp and paper Industry. Priority is given to environmental concerns, energy conservation, productivity increases and quality control.

The second event is during ITF Automation Days at Svenska Mässan in Gothenburg, 5-6 February 2020.

The Swedish industry’s future conference: “Calejo is the future of the industry”

On November 6, Johannes Holmberg, CEO of Calejo Industrial Intelligence, attended SSG’s and Dagens Industri’s joint conference Industry & Future. Here, the pace of Swedish industry’s AI maturity was taken and Calejo was one of several successful examples of practical industrial AI application, which was highlighted during the conference.

Sweden as an industrialized country has proud traditions but with the whole world as a playing field, but with the digital revolution, old truths change. Sweden has the potential to be a strong industrial nation in the future, but what is the status right now? Who will be the keys to being a force to be reckoned with in the future?

The questions the Dagens Industris and SSG Standard Solutions Group’s joint conference Industry & Future tried to answer on November 6, 2019, where about 150 new thinkers, power holders and representatives of Sweden’s heaviest industrial companies gathered for a full day of debate and strategic discussions at the highest level.

Leading representatives attended

Among the speakers were Investor’s Chairman Jakob Wallenberg, Minister of Industry Ibrahim Baylan, Swedish Institute Director General Madeleine Sjöstedt, Vattenfall’s Strategic Director Andreas Regnell, SKF’s CTO Victoria van Camp, AI professors Jan Gulleksen, KTH, and Amy Loutfi, Örebro University, and leading representatives from Ericsson, Siemens, ABB, Microsoft and Google.

Also participating was Johannes Holmberg, CEO of Calejo Industrial Intelligence, who presented Calejo’s unique AI solution for gray box modeling of industry processes. A lecture that was much appreciated by the audience as a successful example of actual practical application of AI in industry.

Great interest from the process industry for Calejo’s transformative AI projects

Calejo Industrial Intelligence participated at the PiiA Summit on October 8 in Västerås to present the company’s two Vinnova-funded PiiA projects that are being implemented in collaboration with Boliden, Optimization and SCA. The event attracted 150 senior executives in the Swedish research and process industry. Here it was found that the companies that will benefit most from AI’s value exchange are the so-called “early adopters”.

The two PiiA projects presented by Calejo’s CEO Johannes Holmberg attracted great interest and great attention both on stage and in the adjacent booth.

One project together with Boliden Mineral and Optimation is entitled “AI as support for more efficient process modeling”. The goal here is to investigate whether AI technology can be used to create models of complex processes in a cost-effective way. A model of flotation will be developed and validated in the project.

In the project with SCA Obbola, which is named “Energy optimization in the process industry with the help of AI”, the goal is to create an AI-based forecast of future needs for water vapor and to investigate whether accumulated evaporated black liquor can be used as an energy supplement in anticipated lack of water vapor.

– The projects are implemented with Calejo’s patent-pending technology solution, which among other things offers the opportunity to real-time derivative process models, which contain both AI technology and traditional modeling technology, explained Johannes Holmberg.

AI a giant leap of technology

During the event, several very talented speakers from research and industry participated. Pia Brantgärde Linder from ABB highlighted, among other things, the importance of power for industry, both in the form of electricity, but also in the form of skills and lifelong learning.

Örjan Larsson, who leads PiiA’s analysis business, and is program manager at the Blue Institute research institute, talked about AI and digital platforms that are now about to transform the industry. During the conference, the study and report were presented AI & Digital Platforms, funded by Vinnova.

The report states that the value creation that AI in the service industry is expected to add could amount to as much as $ 2,000 billion over the next few years. The effects come partly from productivity improvements and partly from effects in value systems such as price, quality, time savings, better adaptations and sustainability.

– Machine learning is a very powerful technology that allows analysis and thus automation at new levels and is expected to produce productivity effects that exceed other technology breakthroughs – from the steam engine to the industrial robot and general computerization, explained Örjan Larsson

“First in – first out”

California-based researcher and AI guru Alexander Fred-Ojala concluded his speech by stating:

– The companies that will benefit most from AI’s value exchange are the so-called “early adopters”.

Partnership with IBM Sweden

Calejo has been selected IBM Business Partner. IBM will support Calejo with both technical and business related support and knowledge.

Two Calejo project funded by the Swedish strategic innovation program – PiiA.

Project 1. Together with the mining company Boliden Mineral AB and the process optimization company Optimation AB. The project will develop a new method for digital twins of complex processes using AI.

Project 2. Together with SCA AB Calejo will optimize the energy within the pulp process by forecasting the need of steam and use accumulated energy within the process to ensure that there always will be enough steam.

Member of Forest Business Accelerator

Calejo has been elected as one of five innovative companies in the 2019 edition of Forest Business Accelerator held by SCA, RISE-Processum, IBM and Bizmaker.

New Patent Application

Calejo has submitted a patent application for a completely new AI engine for modelling and reinforcement learning. The technology allows for flexible, scalable process optimization and efficient interaction between people, data and AI.

Signed NDA with Sweco Position AB

As part of an potential collaboration, Calejo and Sweco Position AB have signed an NDA to be able to discuss technical and business details with transparency.

Interesting Discussions with IBM

In order to offer the right technology solution to our customers, we need a reliable and competent technology partner. AI is based on access to data and for us it is obvious that this data is handled in the safest possible way. IBM looks to be the technology partner we are looking for.
